Bargain bin delights - Lemon and lime cheesecakes

It turns out that Alan enjoys rummaging through the supermarket bargain bins just as much as I do! Bargain binning is one way to place oneself on the road to home ownership, amongst collecting furniture from hard rubbish days and making your own yogurt. At Woolworths we found some discounted cheesecakes in the bargain bin freezer section and decided to do a CHEESECAKE PLAY OFF. After all, the cheesecakes were only $1.20 each and $2.40 in total is a small price to pay for fun!

The great thing about this particular Woolworths visit was that we found two bargain bin refrigerator sections in the store! Double the bargains! Double the fun! Double the stinginess! I am excited! Let's start:)

OMG lemon cheesecake
This cheesecake made me want to say 'OMG Habib'. I am not sure if that is a positive or a negative

You can see (from the very first photo) that packaged cheesecakes are not the most visually appealing creations on the planet. We looked at this lemon cheesecake and had our doubts as it reminded us of aeroplane food in the little square container.

No points for attractiveness from either of us, but we found the taste to be quite nice. The topping tasted like lemon, the cheese layer tasted like cheesecake and also had hints of lemon throughout and the biscuits were not soggy as I was expecting them to be.

For me, this lime cheesecake looks more attractive from the outside than the lemon cheesecake and does not give me the slightest urge to repeat catch phrases. I suppose this cheesecake looks more attractive than the OMG lemon cheesecake as the packaging contains gold coloured areas and you can see the different layers of the cheesecake without having to first unwrap it from a cardboard box. Extra points for the picture of the little cow on the label.

Taste-wise, the lime topping was fine, but I did not find the cheese layer very appealing. For me it did not seem to have much flavour at all, and the same story for the biscuit layer as well.

Alan put his spoon into the cheese layer and realised he could pick the whole cup off the table

We also did not like the fact that to eat it and taste all layers at once, you have to push your spoon right into the container, only to get a lot of cheese and a little amount of biscuit. Perhaps a flatter container would work better

Conclusion
We choose the OMG lemon cheesecake.

The expressions above are my opinions/experiences of the above products which were sourced from a supermarket bargin bin, at the time of consumption.

  1. Great value :) $1.20 and that's actually better than the 'good looking' one i guess that's why we can't judge a book by cover hehe
Wonder if we can get this in Melbourne ~

  2. hehe you guys are so cute! I get excited about things like this too! :P And I can see what you mean about the spoon going all the way down the second one. I was thinking that it was perhaps too tall a container for it (or else you need a tablespoon or a long handled teaspoon).

$0.6 each! WOAHHH:) Haha, never judge a book by its cover, never judge a bargain bin item by its packaging.

Hehe so we're not the only ones:) A tablespoon/long handled spoon would have worked well. I didn't think of grabbing one form the drawer haha!

  6. I love a bargain, but the first thing I'd check is the Use By date! Assuming it's safe, then you definitely have a bargain there. Nice one!

Oh don't worry, these are the best bargains I have ever found! My local supermarket sometimes has small tubs of organic yogurt for $0.99 and that is as good as it gets. Sometimes the bargain bin items are not reduced in price by very much.

Sometimes you are lucky with the use by date and the product is still fine even some days after. I remember I bought a tub of yogurt the day before the BEST BEFORE date (so it should still should have been good) and it was horrible!
